dive sites and transport

There were very few boats which regularly took divers and very few established sites. During weekends members would search for new sites. Most dives were day trips. The first sea dive the club organised was to Bognor.

Members travelled by train as very few had cars and helped conduct a geological survey. Dive sites included Arlesey Quarry, Laughing Waters gravel pits in Kent, Chesil Beach, Stoney Cove, Kimmeridge Ledges, Anglesey and Club Med abroad. Durdle Door and Portland Harbour were regular sites.
In the 1960's the club dived at Newton Ferrers, Stoke, Durdle Door, Weymouth, Salcombe and Plymouth.

Later the committee bought a van from the Arts Council and installed seats and lockers with a carrier underneath for 6 cylinders. The van was painted with advertisements and christened Oscar.

Eventually a group of members bought an inflatable boat which enabled dives to take place a little way from the shore. The committee finally bought a branch boat which was taken to a site in pieces by different members and reassembled there.
